Substance Abuse Treatment
Substance use disorder affects more than just the person who uses drugs and alcohol.
Substance abuse creates a devastating trickle-down effect that begins with the addict or alcoholic, extends to their loved ones, and spreads into the communities where they live and work. Substance use disorder is extremely unbiased, latching on to individuals from all walks of life. The faces of substance use disorder are faces you may think you know quite well. It is your mother, father, son, and daughter. It is your teacher, lawyer, doctor, soldier, waiter, and cashier. Unfortunately, this list goes on and on, seemingly, without end.
Nearly all addicted individuals believe, at the outset of active addiction, that they can stop using drugs and alcohol on their own, and by their own methods. Many will try to stop, and many will fail at their attempt without even giving themselves a true chance at recovering. A chance that seeking treatment can provide.
Another hugely present obstacle between substance use disorder and recovery is the war against stigma. There are many people in our society that look down on the addict and alcoholic as having a lack of principles, or being morally deficient. These same people may believe that those who are suffering from a substance use disorder are nothing more than liars, cheats, or thieves. The truth is that, more often than not, these descriptions do not best speak to the actual nature of someone who is suffering from a substance use disorder. In recent years, science has come to aid in the fight against stigma, naming substance use disorder both a complex brain disorder and a mental illness (DSM-5, 2013 update). Someone with substance use disorder should be seen and treated in the same capacity as those who suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure) or diabetes. They should not be stripped of their dignity or respect.
